Battle of the Fans IX: 2022 - 2023 The Challenge!
12 Lessons for Success
2022-2023 Guidelines and Basic Information
Are you ready to take on your Rival school in a Battle of the Fans Challenge? The 2022-2023 Battle of the Fans Program is back for another year, celebrating the Excitement, School Pride, Support, and Sportsmanship modeled by Student Sections throughout the San Diego Section of CIF! We are excited to see the BOTF program continue to grow across all of our Conferences that make up the San Diego Section, so don’t miss the opportunity to take on your rival school and show them who has the Top Student Section in not only your local community, but the entire San Diego Section!
Send the CIFSDS section office videos of your schools student section making noise on game night. We want to review videos that reflect enthusiasm and togetherness within cheering sections. From the student section we want to witness cheers that pump up the atmosphere without disrespecting all involved in the sporting event. We want to see a mixture of school spirit and positivity within student cheering squads.
Videos can be created by anyone student section leaders, members of the video production class, yearbook staff, student council, cheer or anyone else. Collaboration by some or all of these groups could greatly enhance the entry as well as promote teamwork from groups that normally would not interact with one another.

Five Simple Guidelines for a Great Student Section
- FOCUS ON YOUR SCHOOL. Encourage and direct comments to your team only. Don’t target individuals on the opposing team. Be loud, and provide your teams the additional support they deserve on the field, court, gym, or pool.
- PROMOTE A POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE. Cheers should uplift the crowd and get everyone involved. Be aware that children and parents are there, too.
- GET ORGANIZED. Select a group of leaders. Promote the togetherness of the entire student body. Organize theme nights. Develop your own original cheers.
- HAVE FUN !!
- #BOTFCIFSDS. Use the hashtag #BOTFCIFSDS throughout the fall/winter/spring when you have a great student section idea or when you see an act of great sportsmanship.

Video Content and Length
Videos should be between 2 to 3 minutes long and each video should contain four components. First, you will want to include which school you are challenging to a Battle of the Fans Challenge. You will want to include at least 30 seconds of a student (or students) explaining how your student section models the Principles of Pursuing Victory with Honor, as well as 30 on how your student section embodies the elements listed in the judging criteria and why your school should be named as the top student section in the CIFSDS section. Lastly, always include at least 60 seconds of your student section in action supporting multiple sports. Show us how loud, organized, positive, and original you can be. Don’t forget that inclusion & sportsmanship is a key component to having one of the top student groups in the CIFSDS section.
How to Enter
Upload your video to You Tube and then e-mail the link to BOTF@cifsds.org Videos must be submitted no later than Midnight on April 1, 2023.
The Finalists
After all videos have been posted (April 1, 2023 midnight deadline) the CIFSDS section will choose the BOTF Rival Challenge winners, as well as the Finalists for the entire San Diego Section!
Finalist Tour
Representatives of the CIFSDS will visit all Finalists to meet with Student Leadership to learn how your school models the Principles of Pursuing Victory with Honor. We will also meet with the school’s Administration to ask questions and learn more about your student group.
Determining a Winner
The CIFSDS section and their representatives will determine a winner based on the judging criteria listed above. It will also conduct a vote using the KUSI poll to help in its decision-making. CIFSDS section members will not use the actual number of votes on KUSI, rather it will use the number of votes in comparison to the size of the school: 500 votes from a school with 1,000 students is better than 500 votes from a school with 2,000 students.

The winners will be announced on KUSI!

Final Note!
Sportsmanship is an important part of the educational athletics, and student-cheering sections can be a key factor in creating a festive and positive high school event. This competition amongst the various member schools is intended to promote the positive side of athletics and engage the community and the student body in a show of support not only for their athletic teams but for their school as well.
